[SIZE="3"]15 persons from different walks of life arrive at Mal Junction station only to learn that there is a bus strike, The stranded passengers find help from one of them, a priest (Ardhendu Banerjee), who arranges a bus from a local Christian Mission. Unfortunately the bus meets with an accident and rolls down a Chasm. The driver escapes but his sidekick Polton (Rudranil Bhattacharya) and the 15 passengers find themselves at the bottom of an abyss and well and truly stranded, without a chance of immedite rescue.

It is already afternoon and it is too late to trek and find a way to the top and so they, on the advice of one of their co-passengers Rajib (Kamaleswar Mukherjee), who is an experienced trekker, decide to camp for the night in the chasm itself. They will plan their escape together the next morning.

What follows is an interaction between diverse characters. They are a disparate group with different problems and attitudes. Sabita (lily Chakraborty)is a terminal cancer patieent and her son Khokon (Kaushik Ganguly) has brought her to see the Kanchenjungha as that is one of her last wshes. Siddhartha (Bharat Kaul) is a Doctor and Mausumi (Tanushree Chakraborty) claims to be his sister, only she isn't. Jeet (Saheb Bhattacharya) & Poonam (Mimi Chakraborty) are a newly wedded couple whose parents do not approve of their marriage. The well known film and TV star Aparna (Gargi Roychowdhury) has brought along her half-witted brother Avik (Rajdeep Ghosh). Tewariji (Masood Akhtar) is an old beloved school teacher who has recently lost his wife and is going back to his school.Mohan & Shiuli are two has been artistes desperately trying to maintain standards. Their pretty and rebellious daughter Meghna (Tridha Chowdhury) wants to marry her boyfriend and Mohan & Siuli are hoping that this trip into the mountains will make her forget him. The only uncluttered mind is that of Tito, their son, who talks of ghosts and plays video games with equal innocence.

As the evening wears on and darkness falls, they light fires, make tea and carry on the acts of survival. but conflicts emerge too as do their own doubts and fears. Finally at the suggestion of the priest they decide to talk of their darkest secrets and fears. They promise each other that come morning, they will make a new start, leaving these memories behind them.

When morning arrives we learn of the climax of the movie...

Kaushik Ganguly has gven us films like Shunyo e buke, Arekti premer Golpo and Rang Milanti and we wait for his films with bated breath. Unfortunately, Khaad does not reach the heights of his earlier films. Don't misunderstand. It is not a bad film. Its in fact, a very interesting film of its genre. But we expect much more from Ganguly nad there I feel a little disappointed.

Despite the surprise ending, the story of stranded passengers is old hat. Ever since John Steinbeck wrote the Runaway Bus, stories like this one has cropped up with regularity. Kaushik Ganguly's tale has a very subtle nuance that comes out at the end, but even that does not raise it beyond the ordinary. If you have seen M Night Shyamalans the sixth Sense, you would have guessed the ending anyway.

Yet I enjoyed the film. Perhaps because of the galaxy of oustanding actors of which, to my eye three stand out. They are Lily Chakraborty the veteran, Rudranil as the happy-go-lucky bus conductor whose infectious cheeerfulness keeps the group smiling and Masood Akhtar, who brings the old beloved school teacher to life. Gargi Roychowdhury too does well, but I have seen her do so much better.

I enjoyed the deft directional touches like Tewariji telling the rest, if they want to go on their own they should leave the class. Little touches of humour with the antics of little Tito and the unobstrusive way in which te character of Paltan is developed. I liked the cinematography of Soumik haldar, in particular the night scenes. indradeeps music is patchy. Uplifting at one moment and mediocre at the next. The use of the hymn at the end was oh! so predictable. Good editing by Bodhaditya keeps the flow taut.

Overall a film that is a bit out of the ordinary. For a change a watchable Bengali film that is neither weepy nor a thriller. You will enjoy watching it, but it is not a film that you will talk about two weeks later.

The last of the rips of this movie from DDR. This is a standard 2CD DVD rip. Since the AVI container does not acccept AAC sound, I have reencoded to MP3 as keeping the original AC3 would have degraded picture quality. The Quality is on par with the other rips and this rip will play on all conventional systems.

One of the worst aspects of this DVD are the subtitles. They are out of sync, the grammar is atrocious as is the choice of words. I am uploading them separatelt in case someone wants them. I do think they take away the pleasure of watching this movie rather than assist.
