Here the problem:
I decided to make an image backup using Disk Utility to an external drive, before cleaning my drive and reinstall from scratch.
Now I can not mount the backup image, and the error “no mountable file systems” when I try to. I tried to boot the system disk and restore the image on the unit, but that does not work. I tried to mount the dmg using MacDrive on XP, but that did not work. I have also tried using hdiutil to convert dmg to iso mount XP, and there is no luck there. I tried to check and repair the image file in Disk Utility, and it did not work.

An image device is a special type of disk image that is an exact copy block level source volume and file system, including features such as hard links and compressed system files. You can use the images of the device:
• Create a full backup of your Mac. Images compression device support, so you can make the most efficient use of storage, perhaps maintaining multiple full backups on the same drive. • Create a reusable image of a Mac, with everything installed and configured the way you want, and then clone it on multiple Macs, p. in a computer lab, so that all are configured identically.
The images of devices have several advantages over other formats:
• The device images are usually faster to create images that are not of the device and containing the same files.
• You can make a backup of a bootable hard drive, then restore the backup and restored drive will be bootable.
• You can restore a device image on a hard drive without any special software. Just boot from the installation DVD Mac OSX that comes with your Mac and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
• Images of devices linked files stored efficiently, so they are ideal for archiving backups Time Machine old.
• You can use Disk Utility to verify image … to verify that the backup device is not damaged and can restore the files.
