Gershom Scholem - On Kabbalah and Jewish Mysticism (19 books)

GERSHOM SCHOLEM (1897-1982) was a German-Jewish philosopher and historian, and a central figure in the history of 20th-century Jewish thought. He is widely honoured as the founder of the modern, academic study of Kabbalah and enjoyed an influential contact with an extraordinary cast of thinkers, including Martin Buber, Hans Jonas, Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, and Theodor Adorno.

In the framework of conventional Jewish historiography, Scholem's encyclopedic research was pioneering. He divulged a tradition hidden underneath, and parallel to, normative Jewish religious expression. Below the ocean of interpretive commentary lay another ocean, also of interpretive commentary, but in imagistic and esoteric guise. No one before him had ever systematically ordered and investigated the manifold varieties of Jewish mysticism. As Cynthia Ozick elegantly phrased it: "He was not a man penetrating a field of learning; he was a field of learning penetrating the world."

Scholem is best known for his collection of lectures, MAJOR TRENDS IN JEWISH MYSTICISM (1941) and for his consummate biography SABBATAI ZEVI (1957), the controversial 17th-century messiah figure who aroused among the Jewish diaspora the hope of a return to Jerusalem. His collected speeches and essays, published as ON KABBALAH AND ITS SYMBOLISM (1965), helped to spread knowledge of Jewish mysticism among both Jews and non-Jews.

In addition to his historiographical contributions, Scholem also ranks among the towering Jewish thinkers of the age, taking his place with such philosophers as Rosenzweig and Buber. Scholem held that there is no "essence" of Judaism but rather a plurality of conflicting forces, from the rational to the irrational. He restored myth and mysticism to a central place in Judaism and thus overturned the predominantly rationalist philosophy of the study of Judaism from the 19th century. Scholem also constructed a powerful argument for Zionism as the return of the Jews to history, although he rejected the more nationalistic forms of the ideology.
