Summary:
Promising Young Woman is a 2020 black comedy psychological thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by Emerald Fennell (in her feature directorial debut). It stars Carey Mulligan as a young woman haunted by a traumatic past as she navigates balancing forgiveness and vengeance. It also features Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, and Connie Britton in supporting roles.

Cassie Thomas is a 30-year-old dropout from Forrest Medical School who lives with her parents, Stanley and Susan while working at a coffee shop. Years earlier, her med school classmate, Al Monroe, raped her best friend and classmate, Nina Fisher; there was neither an investigation by the school nor consequences from the legal system.

Cassie now spends her nights feigning drunkenness in clubs and bars, posing as bait for men. They take her to their homes, then she reveals her sobriety and confronts them when they try to take advantage of her. She keeps a record of these men with red or black tally marks, but it is not revealed what the marks mean or whether Cassie has committed any violence against these men.

Cassie goes on a date with former classmate Ryan, who mentions Al is getting married. She begins a plan to exact revenge on Al and others responsible for him getting away with the rape. She meets another former classmate and friend, Madison, who continues to deny Nina was raped, claiming that Nina had a reputation for getting blackout drunk and should've known that she would eventually be assaulted if she continued that behaviour. Cassie gets Madison drunk and hires a man to take Madison to a hotel room. With no memory of what happened, Madison leaves several distraught voicemails for Cassie, who does not answer them.

Cassie next targets Elizabeth Walker, the Dean at Forrest, who dismissed Nina's case for "lack of evidence," despite numerous witnesses to the rape. Cassie lures her teenage daughter, Amber, into her car by posing as a makeup artist for a popular band. Later, she meets Walker under the pretence of resuming her education and questions her about Nina's case. Walker at first does not recall the case and praises Al Monroe as an example of a successful graduate. When she finally recalls the case, she stands by her decision not to "ruin a man's life" and suggests Nina was partially accountable because she was drunk. Cassie tells her she dropped Amber off at the dorm room where the rape occurred with a group of drunk male students. A terrified Walker apologizes for her inaction, and Cassie reveals Amber is safe at a diner.

Cassie forgets to meet Ryan for a date, disappointing him. That night, Cassie again acts drunk in a bar and leaves with a man. As they are walking out, they run into Ryan, who, not knowing what is actually happening, is hurt.

Cassie visits Jordan Green, Al's lawyer, who harassed Nina into dropping charges. Green is remorseful, on extended leave from practising law after a nervous breakdown brought on by guilt. He admits to digging up dirt on Nina to discredit her, as well as other victims and that he is tortured by the guilt and his inability to make amends. Cassie forgives him. As she leaves, she calls off a man she hired to either kill or seriously harm Green. After visiting Nina's mother, who urges her to move on, Cassie abandons her revenge plans. She also apologizes to Ryan, and they fall in love.

Madison confronts Cassie outside her house, desperate to know what happened after their lunch. Cassie reassures her that nothing happened. Madison gives her an old phone containing a video of Nina's rape before warning her never to contact her again. Watching it, Cassie sees Ryan as a bystander. She confronts him and threatens to release the video to everyone he knows unless he tells her where Al's bachelor party is being held. Ryan agrees, then begs her to forgive him and tells her he is in love with her, but Cassie refuses and he insults her as she leaves.

Cassie arrives at Al's bachelor party posing as a stripper, drugs Al's friends, and takes Al upstairs. She handcuffs him to a bed and identifies herself as Nina Fisher. Al reacts in disbelief since the real Nina is dead and eventually identifies Cassie as Nina's best friend. He panics, offers her money, and maintains he did nothing wrong. As she starts carving Nina's name onto Al's abdomen, he breaks free and suffocates her with a pillow while crushing her trachea with his knee. The next morning, Al's best friend, Joe, finds Al still handcuffed next to Cassie's body. Joe comforts him, telling him the murder is not his fault. Joe helps him burn Cassie's body. Her parents file a missing person report, and Detective Waller begins to investigate. Ryan tells Waller that Cassie was mentally disturbed and, still fearful of being associated with Nina's rape, does not tell them she was going to the bachelor party.

At Al's wedding reception, Ryan receives several prescheduled texts from Cassie, telling him that things are not finished. Green receives a package from Cassie with the video of the rape and details of where the police should look if she has disappeared. Gail, Cassie's coworker, finds Cassie has given her half of a heart-shaped necklace with Cassie's name; the police find the matching half with Nina's name in Cassie's burnt remains. Ryan then watches as police arrive and arrest Al for murder at the wedding reception. The final text from Cassie tells Ryan to "enjoy the wedding," and is signed, "Cassie & Nina."
