Witchfinder General
England is torn in civil strife as the Royalists battle the Parliamentary Party for control. This conflict distracts people from rational thought and allows unscrupulous men to gain local power by exploiting village superstitions. One of these men is Matthew Hopkins, who tours the land offering his services as a persecutor of witches.
Witchfinder General (1968), aka The Conqueror Worm, directed by Michael Reeves, Shout! Factory remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical stereo, two commentary tracks, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063285/
Video encoded in two-pass 9 200 kbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected.
Note : One of the "Unholy Trinity" of British folk horror, the originators of the genre, along with The Blood on Satan's Claw and The Wicker Man, this is a deeply nihilistic story about sadistic for-profit "Witchfinder" Matthew Hopkins (a real historical figure, but a lot of creative liberties are taken here), and a English Civil War soldier who swears to hunt him down and kill him, only to, well, you know how the whole "stare into the abyss" thing goes. Vincent Price hams it up just enough to sell his disagreeable role, the other actors are also quite good, Patrick Wymark from The Blood on Satan's Claw makes a small appearance as Cromwell. It's not particularly graphic, but it's really very brutal and unflinching, and the accused "witches" show some quite genuine-seeming terror before being summarily put to death.
This is a good-looking remaster, I could perhaps have wished for better management of saturation, since some reds are extremely bright, while the rest of the color palette is very muted, but all in all it looks very good. Sound is fine too, and the two commentary tracks shed light on British horror film making of the period, as well as director Michael Reeves, who tragically died just a few months after this was released.
