Note : Known to many as "the first slasher movie", this is really more reminiscent of Hitchcock's Psycho (although this actually premiered a few months earlier). There's no big twist, and the identity of the murderer is clear from the very beginning. Instead, the suspense builds from trying to figure out why painfully shy photographer Mark does what he does, and what will happen to the girl next door with whom he tentatively starts a relationship. It's pretty solid psychodrama, with Carl Boehm putting in a great performance as a character that's by turns menacing and pitiable. The supporting cast is very solid too.
It's also pretty complex thematically, with filming and photography taking on a violent association, and voyeurism abounds, at a few points, the main character is filming other people who are filming, and so on. Again, it's reminiscent of Hitchcock, but also of the voyeristic elements of giallo. On top of that, it's also one of the few horror movies with a complete dance number in it. All in all, definitely worth a watch for Hitchcock and general thriller fans, or anyone who's interested in the origin of the slasher genre.
This remaster is not the greatest, probably because of its age, it's overprocessed, lacks grain and high-frequency detail, and is overly sharpened and contrasty. Color is pretty good, with nice pops of red and blue, but could have benefited from some soft limiting in a film LUT. Sound is fine, and the commentary track ok, if a bit dry.
