Note : After a bunch of European folk horror, it's time to check out what this particular subgenre has spawned in the US, and it's FX wizard Stan Winston's directorial debut, starring our old buddy Lance Henriksen, in a little backwoods tale of vengeance, the dangers of calling up that which you cannot put down, douchey 80s kids on dirtbikes, and the world's only combination graveyard and pumpkin patch.
Lance Henriksen's character loses his son to a dirtbike accident, courtesy of the aforementioned kids, and decides to summon up a vengeance demon with the help of a local witch. The demon proceeds to slaughter the kids, but ol' Lance has second thoughts and tries to stop what's happening, for which he has to pay a high price. It's a simple story, but well told, with good performances and a tight script, supported by very pretty cinematography by famous DP Bojan Bazelli (King of New York, The Ring, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) in one of his first features. The FX work is also, as you might expect, top notch, although the main creature design at times veers over that fine line into silly territory.
This Shout! Factory 4k remaster looks as good as you could expect, nice and clean with good, but not overwhelming grain, good contrast and color, and decent sharpness. The many night scenes suffer a bit from the limitations of 80s film stock, but that's not this release's fault. The 5.1 remaster also sounds good, and the commentary track, largely focused on script and FX work, is well worth your time.
