English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected.

Note : Wes Craven's feature debut is not a great movie by any measure. The dialogue (especially in the first part) is cringe-inducingly bad, the image is out of focus more than a few times, the acting is mostly not great, and there are some extremely abrupt tonal shifts with the music choices and some attempts at comedy. But once it gets going, it's tense and brutal, and you can see why it kickstarted the 70s rape-revenge/vigilante justice genre, and how influential it's been.

The now very familiar plot involves a young woman going to NYC for a concert with a friend and getting mixed up with some escaped felons who proceed to rape and murder both of them. The culprits try to escape to Canada, but have car trouble right outside the house of their victim's parents, who invite them in for dinner, before they find out what's really happened, and proceed to take bloody revenge involving castration, Home Alone-style traps, a shotgun and a chain saw. There are also some bumbling cops. As I mentioned, most of the acting is bad, except for David Hess as main bad guy Krug Stillo, who's actually kind of great as a total sociopath, by turns menacing and charming, but never really giving a shit. The villains here are really kind of overhyped in the beginning as to how evil, dangerous and thoroughly sadistic they are, but Hess actually sells it.

This remaster doesn't look great, there's a huge amount of grain, and the material is noticeably taken from two different sources (one is probably the original negative, and looks pretty good, while the other might be an internegative, and is a bit too contrasty and dark). The color is good, but it's not particularly clean. The sound is fine, and the commentary tracks are pretty interesting.
