The Corpse Grinders
When the Lotus Cat Food Company finds itself in financial trouble, the owners decide to find a new, cheap source of meat -- the local graveyard. Only one problem -- soon cats develop a taste for human flesh, and tabbies are tearing out throats all over town.
The Corpse Grinders (1971), directed by Ted V. Mikels, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical mono, commentary track, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068414/
Video encoded in two-pass 10 000 kbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
Note : This exquisite slice of 70s exploitation trash features killer housecats, graverobbing, the titular corpse grinding, a fair amount of cheesecake, and a main title that's literally drawn with colored markers. Is it entertaining and ludricrous? Hell yes. Is it a good movie? lolno.
The story concerns a clandestine cat food factory that tries to save money by using corpses from a local grave digger/robber as raw materials, which gives housecats a taste for human flesh, making them turn on their owners. Trying to decipher the mystery is a doctor and his voluptuous nurse/girlfriend, who, after a riveting sequence of hard-core reporting their suspicions to FDA bureaucrats, decide to take matters into their own hands and investigate the cat food factory on their own. The factory itself is populated by several weird characters, such as a sociopathic, greedy businessman, his reluctant older accomplice, a deaf-mute, one-legged secretary, and a total idiot. While investigations continue, the cat food makers graduate from grave robbing to straight up murder, things come to a head, corpses are ground into a fine pink paste, and there's an explosive finale! (Finale may not actually be explosive. Consult terms and conditions.)
This is actually a pretty decent remaster for this kind of film. My main complaint would be the extremely harsh grain, which required a high bitrate to encode properly, but otherwise it's not bad looking at all. The original mono sound is what it is, and the commentary track is pretty interesting, by a guy who clearly knew the director well, and with some historical sound clips shedding further light on the production (Mikels had died by the time this was recorded).
