Note : It's our old friend Lon Chaney and his makeup skills again, this time in the original film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. And the makeup is pretty great! This is one of the first Universal Horror films, along with The Hunchback of Notre Dame two years earlier, although the imprint itself didn't get properly started until 1931's Dracula. This is also visually kind of interesting, featuring significant sections in actual color, using a Technicolor two-strip process, and the rest is mostly hand tinted, with some parts in straight black and white.
The story is that of the Phantom, also known as the Opera Ghost, said to be haunting the Paris Opera House and causing mischief. The Phantom starts making demands of Christine, a young singer having great success at the opera, and the demands soon turn to threats, with a stagehand found hanged, and an accident staged when an older and more experienced singer sings instead of Christine. The masked Phantom turns out to be in love with Christine, and soon takes her prisoner, which leads to a search by her boyfriend.
As usual, a pretty conservative restoration, the 5.1 score is pretty good, though, and it's kind of surreal when the hand tinted image cedes to full (if not completely natural) Technicolor. Could have done with some commentary tracks or just any extra stuff at all, really, but nothing to complain about in the film itself, it's in decent shape for its age.
