Tombs of the Blind Dead
In the thirteenth century, the region around the city of Berzano was ruled by a legion of Templar Knights, who sought eternal life through the ingestion of human blood. They terrorized the region by harvesting the land and committing human sacrifices. They eventually got imprisoned and executed, left hung out for the crows to peck out their eyes. In modern day Portugal, a group of people visits the abandoned city, which awakens the Templar's corpses, terrorizing the region again.
Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972) aka La noche del terror ciego, directed by Amando de Ossorio, Synapse remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Spanish theatrical stereo, English stereo dub (with a few Spanish parts), three commentary tracks, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067500/
Video encoded in two-pass 10.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
English subtitles for Spanish audio and English subtitles for Spanish parts of English dub OCRed, proofed and corrected. English SDH subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Here's a first for me, a reencode of a film I'd already done. The original I uploaded way back in the beginning, and it didn't get that many downloads, which is a shame, because this is a very worthwhile and unique horror movie, and this new Synapse remaster is a great opportunity to do it again. Image quality isn't hugely changed since the last time (I mostly detected a slight color shift, and this might be a tad sharper), but the addition of three commentary tracks, more subtitle options, and the opportunity to give it a more decent bitrate makes this a very worthwhile upgrade. Also, honestly, the animated corpses in this are some of the creepier, more effective monsters in 70s Euro-horror to me, despite the relative lack of gore (there's some, but it's not like, Italian levels), so if you haven't heard of this, you might want to check it out.
Two women who knew each other at school (and, as it turns out, had a secret history of lesbianism ), meet again at a resort near the Spanish-Portuguese border, and decide to take a train trip with the boyfriend of one of them. However, when one gets too comfortable with the other one's boyfriend on the train, the first woman decides to jump off the train in the middle of nowhere, and she ends up spending the night camping at a nearby ruined medieval town. This proves to be a mistake, as the town of Berzano is haunted by the animated corpses of evil Knights Templar who swore their allegiance to Satan and drank the blood of virgins, thereby gaining immortality. As punishment, they were hung and the eyes pecked out of their corpses by crows, so now the mummy-zombies can only navigate by sound. As the woman's friend and her now freshly single boyfriend try to find out what happens to her, they too get caught up in the curse of Berzano, and thing don't go well.
This remaster, like my previous release, is fine in terms of image quality. Grain could have been managed a bit better, it could be a little cleaner, and there's some warping in splices, but it's not bad. The original Spanish stereo also sounds fine, as does the dub (but please, just use subtitles), and the three commentary tracks, including one with original actress Lone Fleming, are well worth checking out too.
