Note : The huge box office and critical success of The Exorcist made what can maybe best be termed "Catholic horror" a hot trend in the 70s, and there were many imitators. This isn't really that similar to The Exorcist, but it's definitely one of the best horror films to come out of the 70s obsession with Christianity's flip side. A US-UK coproduction directed by the great Richard Donner, and with a rock solid cast including Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, the always wonderful David Warner, who passed away less than a week ago, as well as Dr. Who's Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, it's a pretty classy and serious affair, low-key and sneakily scary, with brief bursts of shocking violence and a typical 70s downer ending. Very worth seeing even today, I think, and it spawned several not so great sequels, which we might come back to at some point.

US diplomat in Rome David Thorn's child dies shortly after birth, and the priests at the hospital offer him an unofficial adoption, a child whose mother died in childbirth and who has no other family, to take his child's place, without even his wife knowing. He accepts, but when young Damien starts growing up and David is appointed ambassador to the UK, strange happenings and grisly accidental deaths, as well as the sudden appearance of a priest ranting about the Antichrist make horrible suspicions take hold. With the help of a photographer whose photos seem to foretell the "accidental" deaths of those who get in Damien's way, David travels to Italy and then to Israel to discover the truth about his adopted son's real identity.

This 4k remaster is quite good looking, neat grain, good color. The 70s photography is as usual a bit flary and soft, but that's the nature of the beast (get it?) 5.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, isolated 5.1 score, and a whole bunch of commentary tracks round out this pretty definitive release.
