Oshare (Gorgeous) is excited about spending summer vacation with her father, until she finds out that his beautiful, freakishly serene girlfriend Ryouko would be going as well. Oshare decides she will be going to her aunt's house in the country instead. She brings with her her friends from school - Fanta (who likes to take pictures, and daydreams a lot), KunFuu (who has very good reflexes), Gari/Prof (who is a major nerd), Sweet (who likes to clean), Mac (who eats a lot), and Melody (a musician). However, the girls are unaware that Oshare's aunt is actually dead and the house is actually haunted. When they arrive at the house, crazy events take place and the girls disappear one by one while slowly discovering the secret behind all the madness.

Note : Perhaps the most baffling piece of cinema ever made, Nobuhiko Obayashi's Hausu started out when Toho approached him to make a film similar to Jaws. He consulted with his young daughter for plot ideas, and came up with this, which is... not similar to Jaws. At all. But it has some amazingly surreal sequences, cheerfully shitty bluescreen effects, amateur actors doing their absolute best as characters with ridiculous names, visual effects created by just putting hand-drawn animation on top of the live-action shots, and a story that has to be experienced to be believed. It's a horror comedy, although it's not really scary, but definitely extremely memorable.
Gorgeous is going on vacation with her father, but when her father introduces her to his new wife to be, she's upset and decides to take her friends with her to a trip to visit dead mother's sister, who she hasn't seen since she was little. Arriving at the ominous house, the wheelchair-bound aunt is welcoming but a bit strange, and when some of the girls start disappearing, the house's long-haired white cat does magic tricks, and the aunt seems to not eat any normal food, but regains her strength and ability to walk, the remaining girls suspect something's amiss. The story of the aunt's lover who didn't come back from the war long ago might have something to do with it, but by the time they start figuring things out, the house itself and its contents have turned against them, including a carnivorous piano and a floor that falls away to reveal an ocean of blood.
This is an ok looking remaster, fairly clean, decently sharp, good color and contrast (and this film has some extreme uses of color). A shame there's no commentary track or anything else.
