Note : I'm going to be completely honest, I'm not a huge fan of this movie. It's well-constructed on a scene by scene level, nicely acted, and has some excellent gore, but the ending, well, ehhhhh, and also, kind of homophobic. Anyway, it's an essential piece of the New French Extremity movement, which produced both incredibly hard to watch masterpieces like Martyrs and even harder to watch pretentious bullshit like Baise-Moi, and this is definitely all in all towards the upper end of the scale, ending notwithstanding. Cécile de France and Maïwenn do an excellent job as tough as nails final girl and damsel in distress, respectively, and Philippe Nahon is a sweating hulk of pink flesh both so repulsive and so dangerous it makes my skin crawl. Also look out for Franck Khalfoun, director of the 2012 remake of Maniac, which we'll eventually get to, in a small role as a gas station attendant. The real star is the gore, though, and it's copious, flowing, splashing, and rushing forth from the necks of crushed heads, slashed throats, axed chests, and cement-sawed faces and torsos.
It's a very simple plot, students Marie and Alex are going to a farm in the south of France where Alex' parents and little brother live to study, far from any distractions. As they arrive, an ominous van drives through nearby fields, and it's not long before a grotesquely violent serial killer invades the farm house, killing most of the inhabitants and taking Alex captive. It's up to Marie, who cleverly predicted the killer's actions, to save her friend from the back of the van and maybe end the man's reign of terror once and for all...
This is a quite good looking remaster, accurately reflecting the early 2000s slick, high-contrast, saturated look with deep blacks and well managed grain. The 7.1 remaster sounds great, the English 5.1 dub is, well, it's a dub if you want that (please don't), and the commentary track is interesting enough. A strange selection of subtitles, but you'll probably be able to find more if you need them.
