Note : It's hard not to have heard about Jordan Peele's megasuccessful 2017 debut, the first and only horror movie to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (it was also nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Actor, which is almost unheard of), but it's also hard to overstate how near perfect it is, meticulously constructed with a series of Chekov's microaggressions, misdirections, and constant building dread kept just subtle enough that there could be an innocuous explanation. It's also extremely well acted and photographed. If I were to complain about anything, it would be that the scenes of violence towards the end could be a bit more graphic and explicit, to complete the catharsis, but it's a minor quibble. This is definitely one of the absolute best horror movies of this century, and it's up there with the best of the previous, too.
Chris is a Black photographer from New York City who's accompanying his white girlfriend Rose to upstate New York to meet her family. He's worried about their reaction to him being Black, but she assures him they're not racist. Once they arrive, Rose's parents seem a bit awkward, but basically well-meaning. Chris starts observing weird behavior from the Black housekeeper Georgina and groundskeeper Walter, but things don't get really weird until Rose's hypnotherapist mother insists on hypnotizing him to help him quit smoking, but instead takes him back to the night his mother died. As a crowd of friends of the family arrive for a weekend party, Chris endures many unsettling interactions with older white people who make insensitive, if not racist, comments about him and Black people in general, and as the weekend progresses, Chris gets increasingly convinced he and Rose should leave immediately, while his friend Rod, who's watching Chris' dog, starts asking questions about why he can't get a hold of his friend. To say much more would be serious spoilers, but just watch it if you haven't.
This is a pretty much perfect BluRay, as is common with new films shot on digital, black levels, contrast, color, all impeccable, and the very small amount of grain also made it fairly easy to encode. The 7.1 track sounds great, the director's commentary is highly recommended, with a lot of deep reflections on inspiration, influences, as well as the production itself, and there's a whole bunch of subtitles, including for the commentary track.
