Carrie
Carrie may be ostracized, but the shy teen has the ability to move objects with her mind. So when the high school "in crowd" torments her with a sick joke at the prom, she lashes out with devastating -- and deadly -- power.
Carrie (1976), directed by Brian De Palma, Arrow 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical mono, commentary track, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074285/
Video encoded in two-pass 12.5 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected. English SDH subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Brian De Palma adapting the novel that made Stephen King a megastar (and probably paid for his coke addiction for years)? Why not, it's the 70s, who cares? De Palma has always been at home with unease, and it works to his advantage here, with the screwed-up social dynamics between Carrie, her teachers and principal, and her weirdo mother. There are a few disadvantages, of course, De Palma is an incorrigible voyeur and pervert, so the opening scene with the teenage girls in the shower is pretty uncomfortable (but probably raised fewer eyebrows in the 70s), and there's some really odd uses of split screen and optical effects towards the end, but all in all, it's a solid adaptation, mostly carried (huh, get it?) by the very solid performances, and it's a hell of a cast, there's Sissy Spacek, of course, but also Piper Laurie, Nancy Allen and John Travolta all do a pretty flawless job. Deservedly a classic, despite a few things that have not ages quite as well.
Carrie White is a social outcast, bullied at school and abused at home by her religious fanatic mother, but when she gets upset enough, weird things start happening around her, and it's possible she can move things with her mind. As a conflict with a mean classmate comes to a head, another girl in her class feels bad for her and arranges for her popular football player boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom, something Carrie accepts after quite a bit of convincing. However, while some people are trying to help Carrie, and Carrie finally stands up to her mother about the prom, others are plotting a final evil prank at the end of prom night, unaware of what they will unleash.
This remaster is above average, fairly clean, and sharp for what it is, although the flare-heavy 70s cinematography is never going to not look like you have something in your eye. I've applied a light degrain and adjusted the black levels and saturation slightly to help the somewhat anemic contrast and color, and I think the result looks about as good as it gets. 5.1 remaster is good, original mono is there if you want it, commentary track with Alexandra Heller-Nicholas as usual interesting and well worth listening to.
