Four Flies on Grey Velvet
Roberto, a drummer in a rock band, keeps receiving weird phone calls and being followed by a mysterious man. One night he manages to catch up with his persecutor and tries to get him to talk but in the ensuing struggle he accidentally stabs him. He runs away, but he understands his troubles have just begun when the following day he receives an envelope with photos of him killing the man. Someone is killing all his friends and trying to frame him for the murders...
Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) aka 4 mosche di velluto grigio, directed by Dario Argento, director's cut, Severin Films 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Italian stereo, English stereo dub, commentary track, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066735/
Video encoded in two-pass 12.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
Subtitles converted to SRT and lightly reviewed.
Note : I'd done this film before, but this new 4k remaster has better image and a commentary track, so here we go again. Another early Argento giallo, a fairly straightforward story with a few nice stylistic flourishes. It's notable for being much more comedic than any other Argento film I've seen, whole characters and sequences are pretty clearly comic relief, such as the recurring postman subplot, and an extended sequence at a bizarre trade show for creative and fantastical caskets. Interestingly, the openly gay private investigator character is not played only for laughs, but taken fairly seriously beyond some stereotyping that was probably inevitable in the early 70s. Also, Bud Spencer in a giallo is an unusual treat. All in all, worth seeing for giallo and Argento fans.
A rock drummer keeps seeing a mysterious man in a hat and sunglasses stalking him, and when one day he follows and confronts the man, the man draws a knife, and the musician accidentally kills him. Guilt torments him, but there's more to the story, as someone has taken pictures of the murder and sends him threatening notes, but no conventional blackmail demand for money is made. As the days go by, he's attacked in his home by a masked figure, and their maid, who has discovered the attacker's identity and tries to blackmail him for money, is murdered in a park. But nothing is as it seems, the man in the hat and sunglasses might not be dead after all, and someone is trying to drive our hero insane.
This 4k remaster is a quite superior version to the previous one, with nice contrast, well saturated color, and very well managed, extremely fine grain. The Italian audio sounds very good, and the English dub too, although it's very slightly incomplete (subtitles provided for the few lines still in Italian). As usual, I recommend watching with Italian audio and subtitles. The commentary track is new, and as usual Troy Howarth delivers the goods.
