House of Wax
A horribly disfigured sculptor opens up the House of Wax in New York, using the wax-covered bodies of his victims as his displays.
House of Wax (1953), directed by André de Toth, Remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical stereo, commentary track, and subtitles in six languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045888/
Video encoded in two-pass 10.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Some more Vincent Price for you, this time the 3D classic House of Wax, which was hastily made after another 3D film proved a huge success. This, however, is a 2D version, and the otherwise very nice cinematography suffers a bit from the filters and mirrors used to film in 3D. Anyway, it's a pretty good period mystery horror with some nice FX makeup and Price being menacing and mysterious, and is a classic for good reason. Also, look out for a very young Charles Bronson in a smaller role.
Professor Jarrod is a talented sculptor who runs a wax museum, but when he's approached by a potential investor, his partner is displeased, and knocks him out and sets fire to the building to collect the insurance money. Later, Jarrod mysteriously reappears, having survived the fire and subsequent explosion, but what are his motives? And why do people keep disappearing?
As mentioned, this transfer is quite soft and fuzzy, which I think is just the nature of the original material. At least color and contrast are quite decent. The stereo track sounds fine, the commentary track is interesting, and all in all, it's about as good as it's going to get.
