Note : There seems to be no limit to the amount of cyberpunk action thrillers we got in the 90s, and of course one of the absolute best stars Keanu Reeves as a hacker hero in the bleak future, where he fights the system and... No, not that one. This is Johnny Mnemonic, of course based on cyberpunk's daddy William Gibson's short story of the same name. It was a box office flop when it came out, but it's definitely worth another look. Directed by 80s pop art icon Robert Longo (whose iconic Men in the Cities series of paintings inspired the equally icon Mad Men title sequence), it looks totally gorgeous, every frame interesting and packed full of details. The story is goofy, and the 90s "cyberspace" sequences obviously dated, but it's fun, fast-paced, and has a hell of a cast, including Dina Meyer, Ice-T, "Beat" Takeshi Kitano, Dolph Lundgren, Henry Rollins, and fucking B-movie emperor and godfather of moist-looking freaks everywhere, Udo Kier.

The story is inconsequential, but here goes, Johnny is a data courier who carries contraband information in an implant in his head. He's hired by a group of Chinese scientists, who want him to carry more information than his implant can safely hold, he agrees after hearing the enormous reward for doing so. However, his employers are murdered by the yakuza, and Johnny goes on the run from both the mobsters and enforcers for the megacorp that owns the stolen data. He enlists help from a mysterious female bodyguard, a resistance fighter, and a cybernetically enhanced dolphin to escape and get the information out of his head before it kills him. Sadly, there's no direct confrontation between the Dolphin and Dolph Lundgren, and I believe this oversight is the reason the movie didn't do well at the box office.

This is a quite good-looking remaster with a nice, clean 7.1 track. Image has good grain retention and decent contrast and color, and is sharp and stable, although it's full frame 16:9 instead of 1.85:1 for some reason. There are three commentary tracks to give you more information than you ever wanted about the film's troubled production, although it's a shame we don't hear from Gibson himself.
