Men Behind the Sun
The film is a graphic depiction of the war atrocities committed by the Japanese at Unit 731, the secret biological weapons experimentation unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The film details the various cruel medical experiments Unit 731 inflicted upon the Chinese and Soviet prisoners at the tail-end of the war.
Men Behind the Sun (1988) aka Black Sun: 731, directed by Mou Tun-fei, uncut, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Mandarin theatrical stereo, and English and Chinese subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093170/
Video encoded in two-pass 11.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available.
Note : It's come to my attention that the sound in my encodes could be better, since the AAC encoder I've been using is not as good as some others. So, starting now, all new encodes will use the Apple AAC encoder (aka QAAC on some platforms), widely considered one of the absolute best.
I've also bumped up minimum bitrate on things like commentary tracks from 128 to 160 kbps, since they often include parts of music, etc., from the soundtrack. There may be a few upcoming uploads that still use the old encoder, in cases where I already had done them and no longer have the source file, but this will be noted. I hope you enjoy this increase in audio quality.
So here's a film that doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it an angry, largely historically accurate, graphic condemnation of the war crimes of Japan's infamous Unit 731 in Manchuria, China during WWII? Or is it a gore-soaked exploitation film with sadistic, lingering shots of horrible atrocities and leering stereotypes of the Japanese? Mou Tun-fei apparently said "Why not both?", and the result is this mess. Apparently in part shot using real corpses, it features the graphic vivisection of a young boy, prisoners exposed to explosions, pressure, freezing, infectious disease, and other horrible ways to die or be maimed, and an infamous scene of a cat being thrown into a room with a horde of rats to be eaten alive (although this one is, so the director assures us, fake, and you can kind of tell). One for the gorehounds, definitely.
A group of young Japanese boys are conscripted into the Japanese army, and are sent to a facility of Unit 731, the Japanese biological and chemical warfare unit, led by Shirō Ishii, Japan's answer to Dr. Mengele and world-class motherfucker. As they gradually discover the horrid nature of the experiments going on at the facility, they by turns revolt against their superiors and accept the ongoing atrocities with resignation, until news of the end of the war reaches the commander, and he prepares to take drastic measures to keep his research secret.
A pretty middle of the road transfer here, not great in color, sharpness, or anything, but it'll do. Sound is acceptable, but not great. No extras. I don't know if the presence of a commentary track would have made this better or worse.
