Creature from Black Lake
Two men exploring the Louisiana swamps run into a Bigfoot-type creature.
Creature from Black Lake (1976), directed by Joy N. Houck Jr., Synapse remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical stereo, commentary track, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074356/
Video encoded in two-pass 11.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available.
Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : It's come to my attention that the sound in my encodes could be better, since the AAC encoder I've been using is not as good as some others. So, starting now, all new encodes will use the Apple AAC encoder (aka QAAC on some platforms), widely considered one of the absolute best.
Apparently in the 70s there was a "Bigfoot boom" in American popular culture. I was not aware of this, but it seems to be a thing, and this is one of several bigfoot-themed films from that period. It's a very low-budget affair, but it's not bad, though a bit talky and slow, going for a realistic approach. They learned the right lesson from Jaws the year before and don't show the monster much, so that the very brief flashes you get are fairly effective, and the backwoods setting is appropriately spooky. Worthwhile if you're a regular Wikifeet user and size queen. Also, DP is Dean Cundey, who worked with John Carpenter on Halloween, The Fog, and The Thing, as well as shooting Halloween II and Halloween III, Romancing the Stone, and the Back to the Future films.
University students Pahoo and Rives catch Bigfoot fever after a lecture, and decide to spend their vacations on the Louisiana-Arkansas border, where there have apparently been several sightings. After a cool reception, they start getting friendly with the locals, including Orville, whose parents were killed in a car accident when the creature appeared to them, and his grandparents. As they spend time in town, they hear sounds from the forest at night, and then are stalked by the creature, before being interrupted by the sheriff, who's not happy about their friendliness with the local girls. In jail, they run into a local who's recently seen the creature, and they become more determined to find it, no matter the danger.
This is a quite good transfer, clean, good color and contrast, well restored without losing the retro 70s low-rent feeling. Sound is fine too, and the commentary track is entertaining.
