Demonoid: Messenger of Death

Horror

A British woman visits her husband at the Mexican mine he is attempting to reopen and discovers that the workers refuse to enter the mine fearing an ancient curse. The couple enter the mine to prove there is no danger and inadvertently release a demon which possess people's left hands and forces them to behave in a suitably diabolical manner. The only way for a possessed person to free themselves from this torment is to cut off their left hand after which it scurries away in search of its next victim.

Note : Time for some Mexican psychotronic horror trash, and it's nothing if not original, a story of ancient Satanic cults, cursed/possessed left hands, silver mining, and gambling in Vegas. British-American horror icon Samantha Eggar stars in this English-language production, which on one hand seems kind of low budget, but on the other hand (the left hand, get it?) does have some thought and care put into it, at least in places. The idea of the unescapable cursed hand could potentially be kind of creepy, but the characters make such weird choices that it's hard to tell where it should all be going. Definitely one for fans of the weird. Also, if you were wondering, yes, the mummies shown in an early sequence are the same ones as in the title sequence of Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre.

Married couple Jennifer and Mark Baines are the owners of a silver mine in Mexico, where the locals seem very focused on various superstitions around the mine regarding left hands and curses. As the couple explores the mine, Mark falls through the floor into an old temple below. They leave taking with them a silver box in the form of a hand, and Mark is convinced that the discovery of an actual Satanic temple complete with the corpses of sacrificed infants in the mine will somehow get the workers to stop their superstitions and get back to work. Needless to say it doesn't work out that way, and when a drunk Mark later opens the box, which seems to contain only sand, and then falls asleep, the contents of the box reconstitute themselves into a crawling mummified hand which attacks them in their bed and possesses Mark, who the next day blows up the mine with all the workers inside, then flees to Las Vegas. His wife is hot on his trail, but she arrives too late, Mark has burned himself to a crisp in a bizarre accident, but his left hand is missing, and Jennifer teams up with a priest to get to the bottom of what's going on, while locals are strangely cavalier about having their hands surgically removed on the mere suspicion of demonic possession.

This remaster is very bare bones, kind of fuzzy and grainy, but completely watchable. The mono track is also about what you'd expect. I'd honestly love some kind of commentary here to let us in on how the hell this got made, but for now, it'll remain a sinister mystery.
