Release notes:
Stone Cold is an explosion packed, no f---- given, old school action film which marked the acting debut of 1980s football star Brian 'The Boz' Bosworth. Directed by Craig R. Baxley, it was poorly received and a box office flop while, in time, it started gaining some sort of a cult status. It has been recently remastered by Kino Lorber from a new 2K scan of the 35mm interpositive.
Picture quality from the Kino release is better than previous 101 Films / Olive Films releases (which are identical) and NSM Records from Germany, being cleaner with much grain retained and sharper details, better contrast and color accuracy.
Audio-wise Kino only sports the Dolby Stereo mix originally featured in the theater release, while the GER disc also features a 5.1 surround upmix. The Kino matrixed-stereo track has a constant 18-bit depth embedded in a 24-bit container while the one from the GER disc is 16-bit and isn't filtered or denoised in the very high frequencies (see comparison): while that might seem preferable, there isn't any kind of detail loss in the Kino audio and sounds very good. 101/Olive discs have an underwhelming and inexplicable dual mono track. The new Kino release also features a commentary by action film historians Mike Leeder and Arne Venema.
