The Blob

Horror Science Fiction

Remake of the 1958 horror sci-fi about a deadly blob which is the spawn of a secret government germ warfare project which consumes everyone in its path. Teenagers try in vain to warn the townsfolk, who refuse to take them seriously, while government agents try to cover up the evidence and confine the creature.

Note : I'd done this before a couple of years ago, but this new Shout! Factory 4k remaster is a pretty big image upgrade, comes with a bunch of text subtitles, and gives me an opportunity to upgrade image and sound quality to boot, so here it is. A pretty perfect little creature feature, an 80s update of a 50s sci-fi horror, with fantastic practical effects, some solid performances, and a quick and nasty script. It's not afraid to take quite sympathetic characters and, well, dissolve them, which gives the whole thing a realistic kick that wouldn't be there with a more timid approach. For me, this is 80s horror nirvana.

A meteorite crashes near a small California town, and an elderly homeless man discovers a slimy creature inside, which attaches to his hand, and three high school students, Brian, Meg, and Paul, take him to the hospital. Brian leaves, and Paul and a doctor find the old man half dissolved. When Paul tries to call for help, the slime creature drops on him, and Meg finds him dissolving, and is knocked out. Meg runs into Brian again, and tells him about the creature, they go to the diner, where the waitress and the cook meet a nasty fate, it turns out the sheriff is also dead, and things escalate from there, with a government scientific team trying to cover everything up, including the surprising origin of the creature.

This 4k remaster is pretty perfect, tight, fine grain, punchy color and great contrast. The color is not entirely filmic, with some very intense reds, but the color scheme of the film, contrasting pinks and purples with cool baby blues and teals, comes through beautifully. Both the 5.1 and stereo tracks sound good, and the three commentary tracks have a bunch of cool info.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk body horror” for more nasty things happening to the human body portrayed in nauseating detail, “hevk sci-fi horror” for more scary stuff created by or at least explained through science, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade of amazing practical effects.
