Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: ...

Documentary

Explores the folk horror phenomenon from its beginnings in a trilogy of films – Witchfinder General, Blood on Satan’s Claw and The Wicker Man – through its proliferation on British television in the 1970s and its culturally specific manifestations in American, Asian, Australian and European horror, to the genre’s revival over the last decade.

Note : December doesn't just mean Christmas, it also means Winter Solstice, Christmas' older, meaner sibling, and it's an excellent time to learn more about horror films that harken back to the old ways, when nature was unpredictable and often took as much as it gave. So here's Kier-La Janisse's excellent documentary on folk horror, a subgenre or mode I think most horror fans were at least vaguely aware of, but which this makes a great attempt at defining. I recommend this very much, even with the quite long runtime, if I have anything to complain about, it sometimes tries to go a bit too far with what it considers folk horror, and doesn't quite know how to stop, but it gives you an excellent basis for forming your own criteria, and I think there's a case to be made for folk horror being more of an element or a mood than a strict subgenre anyway. You'll notice I've uploaded quite a few of the films featured here, and I'm sure to do more.

The film uses a nice combination of voice over, music, animation, and even poetry to set the pastoral, slightly sinister mood, and gives a systematic overview of the subgenre, first chronologically in Britain, which can be argued to be its birthplace, or at least where it was most popular, starting with the "unholy trinity" of Witchfinder General, The Blood on Satan's Claw, and The Wicker Man, going through a lot of British TV from the 70s, and up to the recent revival led by films like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar, and branches out to a more international perspective, with American examples like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Pumpkinhead, Italian ones like Black Sunday, then Onibaba, Kwaidan, and Noroi from Japan, etc. It's incredibly thorough, there are both new and archive interviews with a bunch of filmmakers, as well as several people you'll have noticed popping up quite a lot on commentary tracks for recent horror releases, and you'll probably find yourself with a huge list of films to watch after finishing it.

This is decent enough looking for a documentary, the interviews are mostly well staged and lit, the animations look great, but if I have a complaint it's that many of the older and more obscure films have clips taken from suboptimal, older transfers (likely because of rights issues), but there's so much to see here it's not overly distracting. Stereo sound is fine, nothing to complain about.
