Note : I love pulp stories, and the Destroyer series of novels is as pulpy as it gets, so this 80s adaptation, by a director who made four of the most successful Bond movies, should be a slam dunk, right? Well, it was a horrible box office flop, but I think it's quite enjoyable. Fred Ward stars, and his interactions with his stern Korean martial arts teacher are pretty hilarious, as opposed to the fact that the Korean is played by a white dude in yellowface. The story of corruption in the military-industrial complex is fine, we get J. A. Preston and Wilford Brimley as somewhat unlikely secret operatives, Charles Cioffi as a corrupt weapons manufacturer, and Kate Mulgrew as Remo's ally in the army. It's pretty entertaining and moves at a decent clip, with a few fun action setpieces, although it's the smart-ass, winking comedy that stands out for me.
Brooklyn cop Sam Makin is seemingly killed in the line of duty, but wakes up with a new face and a new identity, Remo Williams, and is trained by a top-secret government organization named CURE, which runs assassins and spies against enemies internal and external. He's trained in an ancient Korean martial art named Sinanju by xenophobic, grumpy master Chiun, who repeatedly and amusingly does his best to kill Remo with harsh training and surprises like "suddenly shooting at him with a gun". Despite Chiun's contempt for his inferior student, Remo learns to dodge bullets and strike pressure points, before he's rushed into action to investigate corruption from an arms dealer selling faulty weapons to the US Army.
This remaster is honestly not great, contrast is ok, but color and image in general is a bit murky, and it's simultaneously grainy and not particularly sharp. Sound is ok, commentary tracks fine. Could do with a better remaster, but this is what we have.
