eXistenZ (1999), directed by David Cronenberg, Vinegar Syndrome 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, six (!) commentary tracks, isolated score and effects, and subtitles in English, German, and Romanian.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120907/
Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Another one of a recent batch of excellent Vinegar Syndrome 4k remasters, here's Cronenberg's mind-bending virtual reality sci-fi body horror, which got a little lost in the rush around similarly themed films, primarily The Matrix, but is well worth watching on its own merits. There's some supremely grotty and gooey biological computer stuff, weird-on-purpose performances lead by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law, backed by Ian Holm, Don McKellar, Sarah Polley, Christopher Eccleston, and of course Willem Dafoe stealing the show as usual. The ending is twisty and hard to predict, and it's generally very intelligent (check out the various commentary tracks for more ruminations).
Allegra Geller is a game designer who's doing a playable demo of her latest virtual reality game, eXistenZ, in an old church. VR games, running on organic computers, are opposed by a terrorist faction called Realists, and one of them has infiltrated the demonstration, shooting Geller in the shoulder before being killed by security, and she goes on the run, helped by publicist Ted Pikul. Geller's game pod may have been damaged, and as it contains the only copy of the game, she insists Pikul help her test it, which involves installing a bio-port in his spine by a black market salesman, but his motives are not what they seem, and they discover they're being hunted by several rival factions.
This is a very nice 4k remaster, grain is maybe a little bit pixely and harsh, but very good contrast and color, sharp and clear. 5.1 track is good too, and there are so many commentary tracks you'll have a whole textbook's worth of information about the film if you want it.
