Dreamscape
A government funded project looks into using psychics to enter people's dreams, with some mechanical help. When a subject dies in his sleep from a heart attack Alex Gardner becomes suspicious that another of the psychics is killing people in the dreams somehow and that is causing them to die in real life. He must find a way to stop the abuse of the power to enter dreams.

Note : The very Indiana Jones-inspired poster (by Drew Struzan, no less) might have been influenced by Kate Capshaw's supporting role in this, but it's not really representative of the film, this is really a sci-fi thriller that uses the conceit of entering other people's dreams to create one of those genre blends that were so successful in the 80s. It's pretty good, though, with some genuinely nightmarish sequences, a government conspiracy plot straight from the most paranoid 70s thrillers, and a great cast lead by Dennis Quaid, supported by Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, David Patrick Kelly, and George Wendt. If I have to complain about anything beyond the not quite state of the art optical and stop-motion effects, it'd be that it doesn't lean enough into the weirdness and possibilities of the dream settings, but it's still a lot of fun.
Alex Gardner is a hustler who happens to also be a talented psychic. After getting into trouble with some gangsters, he gets apprehended by two agents of a research institution lead by Dr. Novotny, who, along with Dr. DeVries, has developed a way for people to enter each other's dreams, and is using it to treat sleep disorders, however, Blair, an agent of the government, is interfering with the research and trying to use it for his own mysterious ends. Alex develops his dream technique by entering the dreams of various people at the clinic, including those of Buddy, a child who has extremely disturbing nightmares set exlusively in sets designed by German Expressionist filmmakers and/or Tim Burton. When it turns out Blair is planning to use the research to assassinate people in their dreams, and has Novotny and several others killed to keep it a secret, Alex has to work both in the real world and in dreams to prevent a plot against the president, who has developed nightmares about a nuclear holocaust.
This remaster is quite good, decent color and contrast, not amazingly clear, grain is present but not distracting, and it's fairly clean, except for the opticals. Slightly crushed blacks indicate it's probably from an interpositive or similar. 5.1 remaster sounds good, commentary track is pretty interesting.
