Suicide Club
When 54 high school girls throw themselves in front of a subway train it appears to be only the beginning of a string of suicides around the country. Does the new all-girl group Desert have anything to do with it? Detective Kuroda tries to find the answer, which isn't as simple as he had hoped.
Suicide Club (2001) aka Jisatsu Sākuru aka 自殺サークル, directed by Sion Sono, Discotek remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Japanese theatrical LtRt, and English subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/
Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Sion Sono is perhaps the most idiosyncratic of all Japanese filmmakers, even his biography reads like the plot to several strange films in one, and this weirdo cult gorefest doesn't exactly attempt to break into the mainstream. The plot is intentionally confusing, the cinematography grotty, and while the performances, by familiar actors like Ryō Ishibashi, Masatoshi Nagase, and Akaji Maro are quite good, it's definitely the gallons of blood under high pressure and mysterious killer cults/J-pop bands that are the stars here. Beyond obviously referencing the Japanese teenage suicide epidemic, it's largely incomprehensible, but somehow good and enjoyable anyway.
Fifty-four teenage girls join hands on a subway station and smilingly throw themselves in front of a train, the first in a rash of seemingly unconnected suicides where rolls of skin, sown from strips from all the victims, are found on the scene. The Tokyo police investigate, and are tipped off to a mysterious website which seems to keep a tally of the deaths. A group of high school students jump off the roof of their school, and soon the phenomenon spreads to all of Japan, while the police investigate a possible connection to tattoos. A tip leads them to stake out a subway station, but no suicide occurs, and soon after, one of the detectives receives a call, after which he also kills himself. A weird glam-rock group hiding out in a subterranean bowling alley commits a rape set to music, and is afterwards arrested, assumed to be behind the "Suicide Club" phenomenon, but the actual reason might be connected to another musical group, J-pop phenomenon "Dessert".
The not so great cinematography of this film is certainly not helped by the transfer, which is murky and lifeless, grainy without being particularly sharp or detailed. Color and contrast are acceptable. LtRt track sounds fine. I would have liked some sort of commentary. Or just an explanation, Sion Sono.
