Chopping Mall (1986), directed by Jim Wynorski, Nameless Media remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical stereo, three commentary tracks, isolated score, and English and German subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090837/
Video encoded in two-pass 12.5 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Here's a V2 of this film, now with no annoying frame skips, slightly higher bitrate, better grain retention, and much better sound.
Since time immemorial, philosophers and film critics had puzzled over the question: What if a slasher movie... but in a mall... with killer robots? In 1986, this age-old conundrum was finally resolved, with the release of Chopping Mall, a film consisting of 98% mall and 0% chopping, surprisingly. Not content with this momentuous achievement, the film also contributed to the academic field of douchebaggology, providing in three of the four male leads examples of the three subspecies of 80s douchebag (the fourth lead is a nerd, but this species was already well catalogued at the time). As a fun aside, this film features both the actors who played the parents in TerrorVision, Mary Woronov and Gerrit Graham, in small parts as a mall store owner and robot technician, respectively, as well as our queen Barbara Crampton, of course, and notable exploitation actress Suzee Slater, whose head memorably explodes.
In what might be seen as a metaphor for over-policing and the proliferation of "non-lethal" weapons, but might also just be a really fucking dumb move, a mall introduces a trio of robots as after hours security guards, combined with steel blast doors that lock the place down at midnight. However, a lightning strike... does something... to the robots, and they turn murderous, just as a group of douchebags convince their nerd coworker to have a party in the furniture store where they work, inviting their girlfriends and a friend of one of their girlfriends as a date for the nerd. While the douchy three have sex in beds in the store, the nerd and his blind date hit it off, but when one of them leaves the store for cigarettes and doesn't come back, his girlfriend goes after him, finds him dead, and then has her head blown up in front of everyone, it's clear that they have to arm themselves and fight back against the killbots.
This is an ok transfer, probably a telecine, but reasonably clean, a little fuzzy with traces of oversharpening, but color and contrast is pretty decent. Stereo track is fine, commentary tracks pretty entertaining. Why you'd want an isolated score for this is beyond me, but there it is.
