Vampire Circus

Horror

After a spate of murders, the villagers of Schtettel kill the depraved perpetrator, Count Mitterhouse. Fifteen years later the Circus of Nights appeared in the plague-ridden village and its performers include Mitterhouse's mistress, children and cousins. They have come to Schtettel to fulfil the Count's last words, an evil, vicious curse of death and destruction on those who participated in his impaling. The children of Schtettel become the targets for a brutal and devastating revenge as the Vampire Circus rehearses for its most deadly performance.

Vampire Circus (1972), directed by Robert Young, Imprint remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical dual mono, two commentary tracks, and English SDH subtitles.

Note : One of the most-liked films from Hammer Studios' 70s output, I'd looked at encoding this one before, but the only available BluRay had an extremely dull and dark image. This new Imprint remaster is a huge improvement, as, although it's honestly still a little dark, you can at least see what's going on. And what's going on is very horny, even by early 70s vampire standards. There's a fair amount of nudity, some implied pedophilia, and a lot of lusting for vampires and heaving bosoms in general. The actors are generally not very well known, but some of the smaller roles have familiar faces, notably Doctor Who star and presumably long suffering wife of Richard Dawkins, Lalla Ward, shows up, as does David Prowse as the strongman. You may remember Prowse as the muscular bodyguard/servant in A Clockwork Orange, but you've surely seen him without realizing it as Darth Vader in the original trilogy.

In a small Serbian village, a woman named Anna is seen bringing a child into the castle of the local Count, who's suspected of being a vampire. Suspicions are correct, as he quickly drains the child of her blood, to Anna's apparent sexual exitement, and the count and Anna engage in a tasteful R-rated sex scene with many cross dissolves. However, the villagers soon burst into the castle, and after taking some casualties, they manage to stake the count, who curses them, saying their children will die to bring him back to life. Anna ends up in the crypt with his not quite dead body, where he tells her to find his cousin Emil at The Circus of Night, and she escapes through a secret tunnel before the villagers blow up the castle. Fifteen years later, the village is ravaged by the plague and quarantined, yet a travelling circus mysteriously arrives, and the bored and depressed villagers don't ask too many questions, which they should, because the circus is full of vampires, and they have evil plans to, as predicted, kill all the children and bring the Count back to life.

This remaster is pretty decent, at least a huge upgrade over the previou BluRay, grain is subtle, color and contrast are ok, detail is fine. Dual mono track sounds acceptable, and both the commentary tracks are interesting.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk vampire” for more horny bloodsuckers, “hevk period” for more films set in bygone times, or “hevk 70s” for more from the decade when vampires got horny and groovy, and then fell out of fashion.
