Note : William Lustig proves he can make a film without "Maniac" in the title, and the result is pretty good, a worthy entry in the late 70s/early 80s vigilante subgenre, obviously set in Lustig's native NYC, which was at the time at least widely regarded as becoming dangerously lawless. Robert Forster proves a solid lead as usual, backed up by blaxploitation icon Fred Williamson, along with Richard Bright, Rutanya Alda, Willie Colon, and our favorite perspirator Joe Spinell. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's quite unapologetically violent, going further than most such films in suggesting that the entire system is rotten and must be taken down.
Eddie Marino is a factory worker whose coworkers, lead by Nick, have formed a vigilante group. Eddie is uninterested even when his wife is stabbed and his son killed in a home invasion, trusting that the court system will take care of the perpetrators. However, a crooked judge lets gang leader Rico off, and Eddie is sent to prison for a month for attacking the judge. When he's released, he joins Nick's group, and together they go after Rico, but things get out of hand, more people are killed, and Eddie has to make tough decisions about how far he's willing to go.
This transfer is pretty good in general, clean and sharp, but it's probably from an interpositive or similar, and it feels overly dark and contrasty with clipped blacks. It fits the scuzzy tone of the movie, but it could have been better. 7.1 track sounds good, stereo track is fine too, all commentary tracks are quite worthwhile.
