Note : By no means John Woo's first film, but definitely the one that put him on the map as a director of heroic bloodshed films, and his first collaboration with and the mainstream breakthrough of Chow Yun-Fat, this is a seminal Hong Kong action film dripping with style, and it established the subgenre that Woo would become famous for. Chow Yun-Fat isn't the lead, but he definitely steals the show, just endlessly cool whether he's smoking, walking towards the camera, smoking, shooting up a roomful of triad members, smoking, getting the shit beat out of him in front of a neon sign, smoking, driving a speedboat while shooting, or smoking. The rest of the cast is also very good, including Lung Tu, Leslie Cheung, Emily Chu, and Waise Lee. Definitely worth your time if you like hyperstylized action and cool visuals.
Sung Tse-Ho manages a dollar forgery operation for a Hong Kong triad, and Mark Lee, nicknamed Brother Mark, is his best friend and bodyguard. His younger brother Kit, who doesn't know Ho's a gangster, is entering the police academy. Ho agrees to mentor Shing, a junior triad member, but an ambush by Taiwanese gangsters where Ho tells Shing to save himself ends with Ho in prison for three years. The triads kidnap and kill Ho's father to ensure Ho's silence while in prison, and when Kit finds out the truth about his brother, he blames him for their father's death. Mark travels to Taiwan and kills the gangster responsible for the ambush. When Ho is released, he tries to go straight and reconcile with his brother, but he's rebuffed, and Mark, who's been stripped of his position in the triad by Shing, now a powerful boss, is bitter and obsessed with taking down Shing. When Ho refuses Shing's offer to come back to the triad and expand into drug dealing, Shing attacks the taxi company where Shing works, severely beats Mark, and critically wounds Kit, which finally leads to Ho deciding to retaliate against Shing, with fatal consequences.
This remaster isn't perfect, but it's more than good enough to show off the gorgeous, saturated cinematography which makes the film a visual feast. 7.1 remaster sounds good too, original stereo is fine, commentary track decently informative, if you don't mind sex pests.
