Note : It's been a while since we did some John Carpenter, but here's an opportunity to do something unusual of his: A sci-fi romance about an alien who crash-lands on earth and takes on the form of a young widow's dead husband, and learns about humanity and love while trying to escape back home. Definitely not your typical Carpenter fare, but it has some of the trademark touches: Stupid and/or malevolent authority figures, gorgeous widescreen cinematography, cosmic themes, and a dashing, if a bit naïve hero. Jeff Bridges is great as the alien, Karen Allen is heartbreakingly cute as the woman whose dead husband seems to have come back to life, Charles Martin Smith is very solid as a sympathetic scientist, and Richard Jaeckel is a great evil NSA director. It's touching, heartfelt, and humane, and the bittersweet ending hits your right where it hurts. There are also some really cool ILM-designed special and visual effects.
The Voyager 2 space probe is intercepted by an alien planet/ship, which decodes the message of peace the probe carries, and sends a small vessel to establish contact. However, since this is Amurica, the US government immediately shoots it down, and it crashes in rural Wisconsin. The occupant, a glowing ball of light, enters the house of recently widowed Jenny, and, after extracting DNA from a lock of hair from her husband, quickly grows a cloned human body, to Jenny's disbelief. The alien has some small silver spheres that allow him to perform miracles, and he uses one to contact his home planet, learning he will be picked up in three days in Arizona. As he learns English, he tells a frightened Jenny he will not harm her, but that he needs to get to the pickup point or he will die. As Jenny and the Starman travel across the US, they grow closer, but both their lives are threatened by the pursuing forces of the US government.
This is, I have to say, one of the absolute best remasters I've ever seen, perfectly clean, subtle, fine grain, excellent contrast and color saturation while still very filmic, sharp and detailed without any sign of oversharpening. The 7.1 track is similarly great, the original Dolby Stereo track also sounds quite good, and the commentary track with Carpenter and Bridges is like a cozy chat between friends. A pretty perfect package.
