The beautiful day turns into a nightmare when a few among them, including the beautiful and enigmatic Miranda, vanish without explanation on Hanging Rock.

Note : Perhaps the quintessential Australian folk horror, although it's much more of a riddle without a solution, a mood piece mystery, where the colonial civilized logic and order founder against the dream-like primeval enigma of the Australian landscape. While there are no Aboriginal characters in the film, the presence of the land's original inhabitants and their cosmology is constant, suggesting a place outside of time where the normal flow of things breaks down. Some people might find this frustrating, but I think it's a superb meditative horror without a clear source, just permeated with unease.

On Valentine's day, 1900, the students of a girls' private school in Victoria are preparing for a picnic. Strict headmistress Mrs. Appleyard keeps orphan student Sara back at the school, keeping her from the company of her best friend and roommate Miranda. When the group arrives at Hanging Rock, a local geological formation, several people notice their watches have stopped exactly at the stroke of 12. Four of the girls, including Miranda and the reticent Edith, get permission to explore the rock, and, after removing their shoes and stocking, they all fall asleep at the same time near the summit. Everyone at the picnic site below is also asleep, except mathematics teacher Miss McCraw, who has a clear view of the rock. Suddenly, the four girls on the rock awaken simultaneously, and all but Edith move as if in a trance and disappear into a crevice. Edith screams and runs back down, where she wakes the others, who notice Miss McCraw is also missing. The disappearances bring about a police search of the entire area, but no one is found, however, some participants become obsessed with the search, and seemingly experience strange phenomena around the rock at night, including hearing conversation from the day of the picnic. Finally, Irma, one of the missing girls, is found unconscious, but she has no memory of what happened, which only leads the community at the school to further unravel, leading to disaster for several of the involved.

This brand new 4k remaster, apparently supervised by Weir himself, generally looks very good, both color, contrast, and detail is very nice, although I feel like they went slightly overboard with the grain reduction, but there's at least some texture left. The 5.1 track sounds great too, and the commentary track features Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, so you know it's going to be solid.
