Note : One of the first, and still the best, of the 80s sword and sorcery/barbarian films, this film features Arnold Schwarzenegger in his ultimate form, a hulking piece of man-beef so shiny with oil it'll hurt your eyes. Directed by 80s Hollywood's favorite fascist John Milius, it's an unabashed celebration of violence and war, the triumph of the strong, and how you should never, ever trust snake cults. While Arnold wins out in terms of sheer amount of meat in frame, the supporting cast really makes the film, from James Earl Jones' Tulsa, Oklahoma, through Gerry Lopez, Sandahl Bergman, Mako Iwamatsu, and Sven-Ole Thorsen, to Max von Sydow's king Osric. It also benefits from a pretty good story, numerous exotic locales, beautiful cinematography, and numerous very good practical and optical effects. The definitive film of the subgenre.
Conan, a young Cimmerian boy, is orphaned by Thulsa Doom and his soldiers, who take Conan's father's sword and decapitate his mother with it. Conan is sold into slavery, and grows up working a huge mill at a branch of Gold's Gym. He's then trained as a gladiator, achieving great success, and is then sent to "The East" to read some scrolls and study kung fu, none of which serves him later in the film. He befriends Subotai, a thief, and they adventure together, teaming up with Valeria, also a fighter, and they raid the Tower of Serpents, belonging to the snake cult which Thulsa Doom leads. They're recruited by King Osric to save his daughter, who has fallen in with the cult, but as his companions don't want to accept the mission, Conan goes alone, is captured and crucified, and his friends have to turn to dark magic to bring him back, which leads to disaster when they next run into the snake cult, and from there, to the final confrontation with Thulsa Doom.
This new 4k remaster looks very good, with nice color and contrast, restrained grain, and plenty of fine detail, although it falters a little bit in very dark scenes, where it gets a little murky and some detail is lost, but this might just be the reality of shooting with anamorphic glass in 1981. 7.1 remaster is very good, the original mono track also sounds good if you prefer (I think it has a bit more presence in dialogue), and while there's unfortunately no RiffTrax for this, the commentary track with Milius and Schwarzenegger is hilarious, with Arnold acting like an excited child, referring to his character as "me" and recounting events from the plot as if they happened to him in real life.
