The Untold Story
In 1978 in Hong Kong, a grisly murder takes place. Eight years later, on a Macao beach, kids discover the severed hands of a fresh victim. A squadron of coarse, happy-go-lucky cops investigate, and suspicion falls on Wong Chi Hang, the new owner of Eight Immortals Restaurant, which serves delicious pork bao. The hands belong to the missing mother of the restaurant's former owner; he and his family have disappeared; staff at the restaurant continue to go missing; and, Wong can't produce a signed bill of sale: but there's no evidence. The police arrest Wong and try to torture him into a confession. Can they make him talk? And what was in those pork bao?

Note : Here's some more ridiculously extreme Hong Kong Category III film, slightly less loosely based on the real-life Eight Immortals Restaurant murders than Ebola Syndrome, which the same team made three years later, and a bit more serious. As usual, Anthony Wong brings his fucking A-game to anything he does, and he's just ferocious here as a pathetic man whose anger issues get the best of him and he just can't help but brutally murder people. As mentioned, this is more grounded than Ebola Syndrome, but the violence is some of the most heinous I've seen in a Hong Kong film, from burning a man alive in the very first scene of the film, to an incredibly drawn-out and uncomfortable torture and rape scene which ends with the victim bleeding out from her crotch, and ending up with Wong just slaughtering a bunch of kids with a meat cleaver after he's killed their parents in front of them. Cast also includes Danny Lee, great as usual, and Emily Kwan, King Kong Lam, Eric Kei, and Parkman Wong as some comedy relief cops. Grueling, over the top, but pretty great. Anthony Wong, folks.
Wong Chi-Hang beats up a man for refusing to lend him money, and then sets him on fire. He flees Hong Kong and changes his identity, and a few years later, he's running a restaurant in Macau, although he discards correspondence addressed to the conspicuously absent owner, and when a waiter catches him cheating at Mahjong, Wong stabs him in the eye and beats him to death, then chops up the body and turning it into meat for the restaurant. When a bag of rotten limbs washes up on a nearby beach, and one of the arms turns out to belong to the restaurant owner's mother in law, police check in on the restaurant, but Wong feeds them pork buns and sends them away. Later on, Wong tortures and rapes Pearl, a waitress at the restaurant, kills her by jamming chopsticks into her vagina, and once again dismembers the body for meat. As the cops close in and arrest Wong, he gets increasingly desperate and refuses to give up, but the truth about the restaurant is grislier than what anyone could suspect.
This remaster is pretty ok, but it was very grainy/noisy, so I slightly reduced grain while also adjusting levels for better contrast, and the result is quite decent. Stereo track sounds good, commentary tracks are worth listening to.
