Note : The movie that started the wave of J-horror remakes, and by far the absolute best of them, this clammy, dread-soaked affair certainly creeped the fuck out of me when I first saw it, and it actually holds up very well more than twenty years later. One of the few horror remakes to possibly surpass the original (although cultural context matters a lot here), it's beautifully shot by Bojan Bazelli, who also did Pumpkinhead and Abel Ferrara's Body Snatchers remake, tantalizingly vague and symbolic, and just really, really creepy. I can't think of many horror movies that succeed so perfectly in creating their own mythology from whole cloth, an improvement, I think, over the vaguely folk horror-inflected vibes of the Japanese original, main cast is solid, in particular Naomi Watts and, of course, the great Brian Cox, as well as Martin Henderson, Daveigh Chase, and Amber Tamblyn, and the downer ending is very satisfying.

Teenagers Katie and Becca talk about an urban legend about a cursed videotape that kills anyone who watches it seven days later. Katie, who's seen the tape, experiences strange phenomena in her house, and is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a journalist, to investigate. Rachel discovers that a whole group of friends died at the same time, and finds an unmarked videotape at the inn they'd been staying a week before. The tape contains strange, surrealist imagery, and when she finishes watching, her phone rings, with an unknown voice whispering "seven days". She starts to experience supernatural occurences, and enlists her video analyst ex boyfriend to investigate the tape, gradually finding clues to the identity of some of the people seen on it. However, when her young son Aidan, who has horror movie creepy kid powers of premonition, watches the tape, she has to race against the clock to figure out the mystery before her seven days are up.

This 4k remaster looks great, with excellent contrast, deep blacks, faithful representation of the near-monochrome, green-tinged cinematography, nicely sharp without being oversharpened, and tight grain. A big upgrade from previous versions. It's a shame there's no commentary tracks, I can't imagine it would be that hard finding someone willing to talk about this film, but oh well.
