Note : For a while, I've been curious about Spanish horror icon Paul Naschy, and this film serves as a good introduction to his oeuvre. It's sleazy as fuck, a pretty flimsy story of a medieval sorcerer risen from the grave to take revenge on his executioners' descendants by, well, I'm not quite sure, but it involves a lot of nudity and blood sacrifice. Naschy plays a dual role as the sorcerer and his modern-day descendant, and both Naschys get nasty, with their grasping hands full of supple young flesh, as this is just packed with women getting naked or forcefully stripped at the drop of a severed head. Lead and final girl Emma Cohen is quite good, as is Helga Liné as the sorcerer's also-evil also-resurrected witch companion, though she doesn't have too much to do, and there's a fair bit of gore as throats are slit and beating hearts cut out of still-living plastic chests.
Medieval warlock Alaric de Marnac and his witch companion Mabille de Lancre are executed by beheading, but Alaric curses his executioners and swears to take revenge on their descendants. In the extremely current day of the early 70s, a group of people travel to the area to search for the grave and possible treasure of Alaric, led by his descendant Hugo de Marnac. When they find an ancient chest, but are unable to open it, people close to it start getting hypnotized and acting as zombie-like killers, in thrall to the chest's contents, the still-living severed head of Alaric. Once Alaric has been reunited with his body, even though you'd think he'd had enough of looking at chests, he goes about kidnapping and fondling the tits of women in the vicinity, using the blood of one of them to resurrect his companion. However, a sacred medallion, which can handily be worn even when nude, may hold the key to making Alaric's head pop right off and sending him back to the grave.
This is clearly a telecine transfer, and it's not great, but it's workable, with decent contrast and color, although there's not much grain or fine detail, and there are signs of oversharpening here and there. Sound is also similarly acceptable (as usual, avoid the dub), and both commentary tracks are worthwhile, with the nice touch of English subtitles included for the Spanish commentary track.
