* Armistead Maupin - Tales of the City series and other works (16 books)
ARMISTEAD MAUPIN (b. 1944) is an American writer notable for TALES OF THE CITY (1978–2024), a series of novels set in San Francisco and now comprising ten volumes.
The first portions of TALES were published initially as a newspaper serial starting in August 1974 and later reworked into the series of books published by HarperCollins. Of the autobiographical nature of the characters, Maupin said "I've always been all of the characters in one way or another."
The first of the novels, TALES OF THE CITY , was published in 1978. Five more followed in the 1980s, ending with SURE OF YOU (1989). The story of some of the characters is continued in MICHAEL TOLLIVER LIVES (2007), MARY ANN IN AUTUMN (2010), and THE DAYS OF ANNA MADRIGAL (2014). The tenth volume in the series, MONA IN THE MANOR (published March 2024), follows the adventures of Mona Ramsey, now the widowed Lady of a glorious old manor in Britain’s golden Cotswolds, and her fabulous adopted son Wilfred, as they come to the aid of an American visitor with a troubling secret.
Maupin wrote two novels which are not part of Tales. MAYBE THE MOON (1992) followed the serio-comic adventures of a dwarf actress working in Hollywood. THE NIGHT LISTENER (2000) is a psychological suspense novel inspired by an eerie episode in Maupin's own life.
LOGICAL FAMILY (2017) is a memoir in which Maupin chronicles his odyssey from the old South to freewheeling San Francisco, and his evolution from curious youth to ground-breaking writer and gay rights pioneer.
In 1997 Maupin received the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Publishing Triangle of New York. In 2002 he was honored with the Trevor Project’s Life Award "for his efforts in saving young lives." Maupin was the first recipient of Litquake’s Barbary Coast Award for his literary contribution to San Francisco. In 2012 he was awarded Lambda's Pioneer Award which is bestowed on individuals who have broken new ground in the field of LGBT literature and publishing. In 2014 he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He also received the Visionary Award from the 2014 Outfest Legacy Awards for his collected novels and their "diverse, interconnected community of San Francisco bohemians – which shaped our collective fantasy of what LGBT life is and could be."
