Face/Off
An antiterrorism agent goes under the knife to acquire the likeness of a terrorist and gather details about a bombing plot. When the terrorist escapes custody, he undergoes surgery to look like the agent so he can get close to the agent's family.
Face/Off (1997), directed by John Woo, Kino Lorber 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical 5.1, three commentary tracks, RiffTrax riff commentary, and subtitles in 26 languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119094/
Video encoded in two-pass 12.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to SRT.
Note : Once John Woo had proven his Hollywood chops with Hard Target, he got a bit of a freer hand, leading to two collaborations with recently cool again after Pulp Fiction John Travolta, the pretty decent Broken Arrow, and this over the top action fest, which is probably the absolute best of his US films. Everyone's working at the top of their game here, from Woo himself to DP Oliver Wood, to Travolta and co-star Nick Cage, who's having a fucking ball being the most Cage ever, and the rock-solid supporting cast including Joan Allen, Gina Gershon, Dominique Swain, Nick Cassavetes (underrated MVP), Colm Feore, CCH Pounder, Margaret Cho, Thomas Jane, and always-excellent character actors John Carroll Lynch and Chris Bauer, who show up in small parts to repeatedly try to kill each other. The action is of course amazing, and the story, while wildly improbable, also works pretty well. If I have to complain about anything, it's that Woo's moralistic tendencies show through a bit, and Travolta's character is such a fucking drag when he's being himself that you're kind of relieved when he's played by Cage, or when Travolta has to pretend to be Cage with Travolta's face, because it's so much more fun, and it makes me kind of want Archer to lose. All told, though, an absolute must-see of 90s action cinema.
FBI Special Agent Sean Archer survives an assassination attempt by terrorist for hire Castor Troy, but his son is killed. Six years later, Archer's relentless hunt for Troy leads to his capture, along with his younger brother Pollux (I don't know, man), but before falling into a coma, Troy taunts Archer, saying he's planted a bomb somewhere in LA which is set to go off in six days. Apparently, the only way to get information out of Pollux is for Archer to undergo an experimental face transplant procedure, assume Troy's identity, and go into the prison where Pollux is being held. However, while Archer is in prison, Troy wakes up, forces the surgeon to put Archer's face on him, burns down the clinic, killing everyone with knowledge of the switch, and assumes Archer's identity, visiting him in prison to taunt him. As Troy fucks Archer's wife better than she's clearly ever been fucked, and then incestuously comes on to Archer's teenage daughter and her comically large nosering, Archer orchestrates a prison break, gets back to Troy's gang, and now the two must work on opposite sides of the law (and the face) to stop each other.
This Kino Lorber 4k remaster is pretty great, excellent clarity, great color and contrast, maybe slightly grainier than ideal in a few parts, but generally, it looks near-perfect. 5.1 track is nice and punchy, all commentary tracks are worth checking out if you're a fan, and the RiffTrax track is excellent too.
