Ghostbusters

Action Comedy Fantasy Science Fiction Family

After losing their academic posts at a prestigious university, a team of parapsychologists goes into business as proton-pack-toting "ghostbusters" who exterminate ghouls, hobgoblins and supernatural pests of all stripes. An ad campaign pays off when a knockout cellist hires the squad to purge her swanky digs of demons that appear to be living in her refrigerator.

Note : Everyone knows this film, of course, and it's an important entry in the mainstreaming of comedy horror in the 80s, as well as, suprisingly, one of the few very popular cosmic horror films, and a showcase for some of the finest practical and visual effects of the period. Parts have aged less well, of course, both the incessant smoking, Venkman's creeping, the Reagan era "the EPA are the enemy of small business" angle, and some of the jokes aren't that great today, but it still plays briskly, is largely really fun, and has a few inventive thrills. The cast is excellent, starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (the latter two also serving as screenwriters), with Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, and William Atherton, as well as some notable cameos, including, for some reason, Ron Jeremy. It's the 80s!

Parapsychologists Venkman, Stanz, and Spengler are fired from Columbia university just after encountering their first real ghost. It's the 80s, so they decide to go into business for themselves as the Ghostbusters, venturing out in New York City to deal with paranormal pests. As their fame builds, they investigate the case of Dana Barrett, who saw a demonic dog in her refrigerator who growled the word "Zuul", and as ghostly activity increases throughout the city, they discover that Zuul was a servant of a transdimensional god of destruction named Gozer the Gozarian. The EPA shuts down their ghost containment unit, sending all their captured ghosts back out into the city, and the Ghostbusters are briefly put in jail, where they come to the conclusion that Dana's building is a supernatural antenna designed to attract Gozer and bring about the apocalypse. The mayor turns to them to quell the supernatural chaos in the city, and it all leads to a showdown at the top of Dana's building, where Dana and her neighbour Louis have been possessed and are opening the gate to let Gozer through.

The 4k remaster is pretty great, maybe slightly grainer than I would have expected from a film shot in scope (with the exception of the VFX sequences, which were likely shot on VistaVision or similar, and are very clean). 7.1 remaster sounds great too, original stereo is nice and clear, commentary track is pretty interesting.
