Note : Here's a little-seen Italian horror film that I think deserves more attention. I suspect that had this come out 5 or 10 years before, it would be regarded as a classic. As it is, it's a solid atmospheric horror with some creepy Lovecraftian cult weirdness, a bit of giallo, decent performances, and a bleak ending. There's plenty of Argento and Bava influence in this, especially in the excellent visuals, but it stands on its own. Sure, the staging's a little theatrical, and the effects, while often great, can sometimes look hokey, the cast, headed up by Roland Wybenga, Paola Rinaldi, and Margareta von Krauss, is solid, and I think in general it pulls it off, helped by the moody Budapest setting.

Professor Alan Whitmore has a fear of spiders since being locked in a closet with a few very large ones as a child. He's sent by a group of powerful men to Budapest to report on the progress of something called the Intextus project, along with his guide Genvieve, who's pretty obviously trying to seduce him. Once in Budapest, he finds that professor Roth is paranoid and raving about something wanting to take over his body, before being found hung in a giant spider web, and when Whitmore finds out that an ancient spider cult is associated with the area, his further investigations might lead him right into their many legs.

This Severin 4k remaster looks quite good, nice and clean, good color and contrast (maybe slightly clipped blacks), with decent detail. Sound is fine too, both in English and Italian, and the commentary track is a bit dry, but informative.
