Hawk the Slayer
Hawk the Slayer, after seeing both his father and bride die at the hands of his malevolent brother, Voltan, sets out for revenge and the chance to live up to his title. Tooling himself up with the "mind-sword" and recruiting a motley band of warriors: a giant, a dwarf, a one-armed man with a machine-crossbow and an elf with the fastest bow in the land; Hawk leads the battle against Voltan to free the land from the forces of evil and avenge his loved ones.

Note : Britain and its history was arguably the origin of the sword and sorcery genre, but most of the actual films in the subgenre were American, and then later Italian. However, here's a very culty British entry, somewhat famously the favorite film of Bill Bailey's character in the sitcom Spaced. It's not amazing, honestly, but it has some fun moments, near Doctor Who-level low budget as it often looks. Weirdly, Jack Palance stars as the bad guy, backed up by John Terry, Bernard Bresslaw, W Morgan Sheppard, Patricia Quinn, Cheryl Campbell, Annette Crosbie, Roy Kinnear, veteran character actor Patrick Magee, and Catriona MacColl, who you may remember from various Lucio Fulci films. However, the uncredited twin stars of this film are the many, many, many crossfades, and the omnipresent fog, both of which get more screentime than any of the actual actors. On the other hand, the RiffTrax track is very funny.
The evil Voltan attacks his father's castle to steal the key to an ancient mystical power known as "the last elven mind stone", but his father refuses, so Voltan mortally wounds him. Voltan's brother Hawk enters, and his father gives him a sword which merges with the mind stone, giving it magical powers. Hawk wovs to avenge his father. As Voltan ravages the countryside, a warrior called Ranulf is nursed back to health by nuns at a convent, and is later tasked with getting back the convent's abbess, who's been kidnapped by Voltan. This leads him to Hawk, and the two team up, joined by a group of fairly generic fantasy characters, but they might still not be strong enough to face Voltan head on, and sorcery might be needed.
This is a middle of the road transfer, but it looks fine, really, reasonably clean, ok color and contrast, not too grainy. The cinematography is extremely flary and gauzy, as was common around 1980, which doesn't help with the detail level, but all in all, it's quite watchable, and the stereo track sounds fine too. RiffTrax is, as usual, very worthwhile.
