Note : Another one of the recent Cameron 4k remasters, and this one is the least bad of the bunch. While Aliens suffered from AI upscale wankery, this is at least a proper 4k scan, and offers a very decent picture quality upgrade, although there's way too little grain left for my taste. Anyway, here's James Cameron doing 2001: A Space Odyssey under water, with added bad military people, in the exteded director's cut, which has more sappy emotional stuff, but is all in all better. Ed Harris is a solid, dependable lead, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is very good too, Michael Biehn makes a fucking scary psycho, and the rest of the cast, including Leo Burmester, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, Kimberly Scott, Chris Elliott, and our old buddy with the best name, Dick Warlock, is very solid. This isn't Cameron's most interesting or even entertaining film, although it's plenty of both, but it might be his most polished, with amazing underwater sequences, beautiful cinematography, great practical effects, and even some really early CGI that doesn't look entirely like ass.

Am American nuclear submarine encounters an unidentified object and sinks in the Caribbean. The wily Russians are moving in to try to salvage the wreck, and a hurricane is also approaching, so the government recruits Deep Core, a private experimental underwater drilling platform that happens to be nearby. The platform is run by Bud Brigman, who's now reunited with his estranged wife Lindsey, who designed it, and also a bunch of new friends in the form of a testosterone-dripping team of navy SEALs. While investigating the sunken sub, Lindsey encounters a weird light, and as SEAL leader Coffey gets more paranoid, recovering a nuclear warhead from the submarine, the storm hits their support ship, tearing off a cable crane which sinks into the abyss, almost pulling the whole platform with it, and killing several of the crew. Now isolated, the crew is contacted by a seemingly alien intelligence, which the military dudes obviously merits nuking the whole site from orbit. Lindsey and Bud, along with the rest of the crew, must fight back, disarm the warhead, and possible make renewed contact with whatever it is lives at the bottom of the trench.

This 4k remaster would have been perfect, had it had more than a remnant of grain left. Otherwise, though, color, contrast, detail and everything else looks stunning. 7.1 remaster also sounds great, no commentary track, which is unsurprising, given how everyone hated this production and the cast and crew dubbed it "The Abuse".

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk underwater” for more things submerged or emerging from the water, “hevk sci-fi action” for more of the genre James Cameron basically perfected in the 80s, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when, for a brief moment, everyone wanted to make underwater movies, then thought better of it after hearing the stories from this production.
