Dragonslayer

Fantasy

The sorcerer and his apprentice Galen are on a mission to kill an evil dragon in order to save the King’s daughter from being sacrificed in accordance to a pact that the King himself made with the dragon to protect his kingdom. A fantasy film from Disney Studios that exhausted all possible visual effects of the time.

Note : The late 70s to early 80s fantasy boom saw a bunch of interesting films that have been largely forgotten, and this is one of the better ones, featuring a pretty interesting story, great practical effects (many designed by the legendary Phil Tippett), beautiful cinematography, stunning locations, and a very solid set of performances from weirdo character actor Peter MacNicol in a rare lead role, Caitlin Clarke, Ralph Richardson, John Hallam, Peter Eyre, and the Emperor himself, Ian McDiarmid. It didn't do great at the box office, but it's nice to see this high quality 4k remaster do it some justice.

In a fantasy version of England, the countryside is terrorized by the wonderfully named but very evil ancient dragon Vermithrax Perjorative. The king offers it virgins, chosen by lottery, twice a year, but the locals aren't too happy about it, and set out to seek help from the sorcerer Ulrich of Cragganmore. When Ulrich challenges the king's skeptical captain to stab him, to prove his power, the wizard immedately and hilariously dies, to the horror of everyone, particularly his young apprentice Galen. Galen is magically indicated to be the wizard's successor, and sets out on an expedition to take on the dragon. The king is angry about Galen's meddling in the kingdom's affairs, and has him imprisoned, however, the king's daughter decides to help Galen when she realizes the lottery to be sacrificed to the dragon is rigged, excluding the daughters of the rich and powerful. After a bit of back and forth, the princess fixes the lottery so that she's chosen, and the desperate king has no option but to allow Galen to take on the dragon, which doesn't work out as well as everyone had hoped, until Galen gets some unexpected help.

This 4k remaster looks fucking great, with very natural color and contrast, tight grain, and a near perfect presentation all in all. 7.1 remaster also sounds very good, as does the original Dolby Surround, and the commentary track features the director and Guillermo del Toro for some reason, which is hard to dislike.
