Note : Jeffrey Combs as a romantic lead? Sure, I guess. Combs as a Doctor Strange ripoff superhero romantic lead? Opposite Brian Thompson, with Yvette Nipar as the love interest? I'm... kind of here for it? Interesting fact, by the end of this film, Combs is the second protagonist to kill a Brian Thompson villain by oversized object through the midsection and hoisting him in the air, and he's the better actor of the two. So this is obviously ridiculous, wizard duel through stop motion animated dinosaur skeletons notwithstanding, but it's a very entertaining kind of ridiculous, and if that's not enough for you, there's always the MST3k track, which, while from the revival that's not quite as good as the classic shows, is still plenty funny. Supporting cast includes Jay Acovone, Keith Coulouris, and Ritch Brinkley.
Doctor Mordrid is a wizard sent to Earth to protect it, and his current preoccupation is the evil wizard Kabal, who's searching for various spell ingredients to open a gate to hell and release its inhabitants upon the Earth. Over 150 years, Mordrid watches for signs of Kabal's arrival, and he's currently posing as a criminal psychologist and landlord (boo), one of whose tenants is police consultant Samantha Hunt. When Mordrid receives news of a series of mystical items gone missing, he suspects Kabal, and starts actively searching for him, while Samantha tries to find out more about who this mystery man with the sexy turtleneck and amulet is. However, Mordrid is arrested for murder, and now he needs Samantha's help to escape police custody, stop Kabal, and save the Earth.
This is a pretty middle of the road transfer, but at least the cinematography is a times pretty nice. The 5.1 track sounds good, as does the original stereo, the commentary tracks are interesting enough, and the MST3k track is quite good, although note this film has a couple of scenes, including some nudity, that was cut out of the MST3k episode, so those parts have no jokes.
