Blow-Up
A successful mod photographer in London whose world is bounded by fashion, pop music, marijuana, and easy sex, feels his life is boring and despairing. But in the course of a single day he accidentally captures on film the commission of a murder. The fact that he has photographed a murder does not occur to him until he studies and then blows up his negatives, uncovering details, blowing up smaller and smaller elements, and finally putting the puzzle together.
Blow-Up (1966), directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, Criterion 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical mono, commentary track, and English subtitles.

Note : A bit more serious than a lot of the films I do, but this is absolutely essential as both a predecessor to the paranoid thrillers of the 70s, and as a snapshot of London's swinging 60s. It stars David Hemmings, who we've seen in, let's say, quite a few very different films, including Argento's Deep Red, which is interesting to compare and contrast with this. Like almost everything Italian from this period, it's also impeccably stylish and full of stunningly gorgeous women. The rest of the quite impressive cast includes Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, John Castle, Veruschka von Lehndorff, Jane Birkin, Gillian Hills, and Peter Bowles, and a concert at a club late in the film features The Yardbirds, including both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on guitars. Maybe the definite film about London in this time period.
Successful photographer Thomas works both as a fine art and fashion photographer, making him about as hip as you can be in 60s London. A delay one morning makes him late for several photo sessions, and in one, he gets bored and leaves, with no regard for the models and staff. He visits an antique store, then wanders into a park, where he furtively takes photos of a couple. The woman, Jane, is angry when she discovers him, and demands the film, but he refuses. When he meets his agent for lunch, he notices a man following him and looking into his car. Later, Jane arrives at his studio desperately asking for the film, and they flirt, but Thomas gives her another roll of film on purpose. When Thomas examines blow-ups of the pictures from the park, he discovers a third person with a gun in the bushes, and thinks his photos may have saved someone's life. After a visit from a pair of teenage wannabe models, which ends in sex, he examines the photos again, and sees a blurry figure on the ground, making him return to the park, where he finds a dead body. He runs off when he thinks someone else is there, and returns to find his studio ransacked and most of his photos from the park gone. As his paranoia grows and his grip on what's real or not slips, he desperately looks for answers that are not forthcoming.
This is a pretty decent remaster, but it's not terribly sharp, and the color is slightly strange, as has been the case with a lot of Criterion releases lately. Grain is nicely managed, though. Mono track sounds fine, and the commentary track is good, though a bit academic.
