Note : I guess at some point we had to get around to the early-2000s torture porn subgenre, which I'm not very fond of (strangely, since I like older films that combine torture and porn just fine). This isn't the worst of them, though, it's a pretty effective Australian slasher about people getting lost in the outback and going up against an anthropomorphized collection of Aussie stereotypes, and it mostly runs on dread, with occasional brief, intense, and gory violence. With its rural setting, vaguely based on true events pitch (in this case, kind of true), and dilapidated torture lair, it certainly brings to mind Texas Chain Saw, and it hits most of those beats, but there's no backpackers on the barbie here. The early 2000s digital video look isn't great (although the cinematography in itself is competent), but it does lend it a certain verité feel. The sometimes annoying, but ultimately pretty decent cast includes John Jarratt, Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi, and Nathan Phillips.
Two British tourists and their Australian friend are backpacking across Australia, and they buy a used car for their trip across the outback. They stop at a famous meteor crater, but when they get back to the car, they find it won't start. Hours later, Mick Taylor, a man living in a camp nearby, shows up, and offers to tow their car to his camp and help repair it. After several hours on the road, they arrive at an abandoned mining camp, where Mick seems work on their car, and later offers them water, which makes them all fall unconscious. Of course, this is a rural torture murder man, so they wake up bound and gagged, and are subjected to various hardships as they repeatedly try to escape, fight back, get help from others, discover the remains of previous victims, and so on.
This is probably a pretty perfect transfer of a film that for technical reasons has limited visual quality. It looks fine for what it is, and the 5.1 track sounds great, with very effective sound design. The commentary track is interesting if you want to learn about the travails of low budget filmmaking.
