The Endless
Two brothers return to the cult they fled from years ago to discover that the group's beliefs may be more sane than they once thought.
The Endless (2017), directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Arrow remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical 5.1, directors' commentary, and English SDH subtitles.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3986820/
Video encoded in two-pass 11.5 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : Indie auteurs Benson and Moorhead are some of the more interesting people in horror right now, fearlessly tackling high-concept cosmic horror with budgets similar to what most Hollywood movies spend on catering. It doesn't always work, but it's usually interesting and original, and their grit has gotten them a foot in the door on mainstream stuff, especially TV like Archive 81, Moon Knight, and Loki, but their weirdo hearts clearly lie in subtle indie mumbly horror, often with their own (sufficient, if not fantastic) acting talents front and center. This is one of their best, cosmic horror done on an intimate scale, and it pretty much pulls of what it ambitiously sets out to do. Apart from Benson and Moorhead themselves in the lead roles, also features Callie Hernandez, Tate Ellington, Shane Brady, and James Jordan. What does it all mean? Who knows, but it's a pretty enjoyable head trip to go on, and it's refreshing to see cosmic horror that doesn't just rehash Lovecraft.
A pair of brothers living in California receive a video tape from Camp Arcadia, where they grew up. Their recollections of the place are pretty different, while Aaron remembers it as a friendly commune, Justin thinks it was a UFO death cult. Since the cultists are clearly alive, and the brothers haven't been doing so great since leaving, they decide to return for one day to see what's going on. Although they've been gone for a decade, none of the residents at the commune seem to have aged, and they all receive the pair warmly. Aaron enjoys the return, while Justin keeps his distance, but Aaron convinces Justin to stay a bit longer. Strange things start happening, like a game of tug of war where the other end of the rope disappears into the night sky, and two full moons apparently visible at the same time. As reality and time itself seems to slowly fragment, the two brothers have to make the very important decision of whether to leave, or perhaps be forced to stay forever.
This, like most modern films, is a pretty perfect transfer. I'm no big fan of the washed-out, low contrast look of the film, but it's very 2017, I guess, and it translates and compresses well. The 5.1 track sounds fine, the commentary track is very interesting.
